Setting up the geofencing in Home Center app

Introduction

In this article you can find out about:

  • How to set up the geofencing.
  • How to create a simple scene on Home Center 3 which uses geofencing.

What is geofencing?

A geofence is an invisible boundary, a virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area. For example, with geofencing you can create “triggers” so that when a device enters or leaves the pre-defined boundaries, some actions happens.

Requirements

  • FIBARO System with configured scenes.
  • iPhone or iPad (iOS 10.0 or later) or Android device (Android 4.4 or later).
  • FIBARO Home Center app.
  • Configured Home Location:

Setting up geofencing on an iPhone (iOS)

  1. Make sure that you have set the home location in the Configuration Interface ( > General > Location).
  2. Turn on Geofencing in the Home Center app (Application Settings > Geofencing).
  3. Go to the iPhone’s Settings, scroll down and choose Home Center from the list.
  4. Tap Location and set Always (and make sure you have Precise Location enabled).
  5. Done. Your iOS device is now configured. You can now make a scene using Geofencing in the Configuration Interface.

Setting up geofencing on Android

  1. Make sure that you have set the home location in the Configuration Interface ( > General > Location).
  2. Turn on Geofencing in the Home Center app (Application Settings > Geofencing).

  3. Select “Allow all the time”. If you have any issues, check in the phone settings, whether you have selected the right privileges level.

  4. Done. Your Android device is now configured. You can now make a scene using Geofencing in the Configuration Interface.

Battery optimization may hinder geofencing

Different Android manufactures tweak and optimize their phones as they see fit. Sometimes, these optimizations may go too far and cause problems with the proper functioning of geofencing.Check out this website to see how to disable battery optimizing mechanisms on your Android device.

Creating a scene using the geofencing

  1. Open the Configuration Interface.
  2. Go to > Scenes.
  3. Click Add scene.
  4. Choose Block Scene.
  5. Set basic settings:
    • Name – name of the scene.
    • Run scene – choose if the scene will be run automatically (when conditions are met) or manually (ignore conditions).
    • Allow to restart a running scene – if set toYes, every new activation of the scene restarts it, if set to No, scene can’t be activated again if it is already running.
    • Category – categories are used for filtering scenes by type.
    • Icon – icon that will represent the scene.
  6. Save.
  7. Configure the following blocks:
  8. Save.
  9. Done. Whenever the user admin arrives home, the porch lights turn on.
