Additional features

Geofencing

What is geofencing?

A geofence is an invisible boundary, a virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area. For example, with geofencing you can create “triggers” so that when a device enters or leaves the pre-defined boundaries, some actions happens.

Home Location

Geofencing uses the Home Location set in the Home Center gateway.

Setting up geofencing on an iPhone (iOS)

  1. Make sure that you have set the home location in the Configuration Interface ( > General > Location).
  2. Turn on Geofencing in the Home Center app (Application Settings > Geofencing).
  3. Go to the iPhone’s Settings, scroll down and choose Home Center from the list.
  4. Tap Location and set Always (and make sure you have Precise Location enabled).
  5. Done. Your iOS device is now configured. You can now make a scene using Geofencing in the Configuration Interface.

Setting up geofencing on Android

  1. Make sure that you have set the home location in the Configuration Interface ( > General > Location).
  2. Turn on Geofencing in the Home Center app (Application Settings > Geofencing).

  3. Select “Allow all the time”. If you have any issues, check in the phone settings, whether you have selected the right privileges level.

  4. Done. Your Android device is now configured. You can now make a scene using Geofencing in the Configuration Interface.

Battery optimization may hinder geofencing

Different Android manufactures tweak and optimize their phones as they see fit. Sometimes, these optimizations may go too far and cause problems with the proper functioning of geofencing.

Check out this website to see how to disable battery optimizing mechanisms on your Android device.

Creating a scene using the geofencing

  1. Open the Configuration Interface.
  2. Go to > Scenes.
  3. Click Add scene.
  4. Choose Block Scene.
  5. Set basic settings:
    • Name – name of the scene.
    • Run scene – choose if the scene will be run automatically (when conditions are met) or manually (ignore conditions).
    • Allow to restart a running scene – if set to Yes, every new activation of the scene restarts it, if set to No, scene can’t be activated again if it is already running.
    • Category – categories are used for filtering scenes by type.
    • Icon – icon that will represent the scene.
  6. Save.
  7. Configure the following blocks:
  8. Tap Save.
  9. Done. Whenever the user admin arrives home, the porch lights turn on.

Push notifications

What is a push notification?

A push notification is a message that pops up on a mobile device. Users don’t have to be in the app or using their devices to receive them. In general, push notifications can do a lot of things; for example, they can show the latest sports scores, get a user to take an action, such as downloading a coupon, or let a user know about an event, such as a flash sale.

Push notifications look like SMS text messages and mobile alerts, but they only work if a user has the given app installed. Each mobile platform has support for push notifications — iOS, Android, etc.

What is an interactive push notification?

Interactive notifications are an improvement over one-way push notifications that essentially acted as read-only messages. With interactive push you can provide a response which in turn can execute another action. The idea is particularly useful within the smart home ecosystem. We can set up some interactive notifications with actions, which we usually do, but will not happen automatically. Interactive pushes introduce better home control as they can invoke an action in response to the displayed message.

What is a critical alert notification?

Critical alerts ignore the mute switch and Do Not Disturb; the system plays a critical alert’s sound regardless of the device’s mute or Do Not Disturb settings. This type of push notification is reserved for notifications of the highest importance i.e. concerning the safety of your home.

How to create a push notification on Home Center 3

  1. Open the Configuration Interface.
  2. Go to  > Scenes > Add Scene.
  3. Choose Block Scene.
  4. Provide the name and choose the icon.
  5. Set the trigger for the notification, for example, whenever the window is opened.
  6. In the next column set the actions, i.e. sending the push notification to the specified user with a specified message.
  7. Done. Whenever the window in the bedroom opens, you receive a push notification.
